CYTOPATHOLOGY
FINE NEEDLE ASPIRATION
Aspiration cytology specimens are those obtained by applying negative pressure (suction) to a small gauge needle (i.e. fine needle aspiration or FNA); performed on any mass lesion but most commonly thyroid, lung, liver, pancreas, breast.
- Allows safe, rapid evaluation of fluids and lesions.
- Superior cell block preparation allows recapitulation of normal histology, more refined diagnoses due to performance of immunostains and molecular testing for prognostic and therapeutic information.
